How does attendance impact the student's grade in the course?

Attendance Grade impacts the student's grade based on the "Attendance Weight" set for that class.

The class weights can be found in the class weight page.

Step 1: Select "Classes" from the main menu.

Step 2: Select the class from the appropriate year and semester.

Step 3: Select the "Weights" option from the class menu.

  • You can set the weights for each class individually and decide how attendance will impact the final grade. For more information on other weight categories (tests, homework, projects, and trackers), refer to the appropriate help tutorials in the "Class Grade" section.

Attendance Weight Options

No Impact on Class Grade

You can set attendance to have no impact on the class grade in two ways:

  1. Mandatory Attendance, Zero Weight:

    • Set the attendance weight to zero, and the other categories to 100%.
    • Attendance will still be taken, but it won't affect the final grade.
  2. Voluntary Attendance:

    • Step 1: Go to the class settings page.

    • Step 2: Scroll down to the grading section.

    • Step 3: Set the class type to either "No Attendance On Transcript" or "No Attendance Not on Transcript."

    • Step 4: Select "Save" to save your changes.

      • A notification at the top of the "Take Attendance" page will indicate voluntary attendance.

Voluntary Attendance with Impact on Class Grade

  • Step 1: Set the class type to either "No Attendance On Transcript" or "No Attendance Not on Transcript."

  • Step 2: Go to the class weights page and enter the desired attendance weight.

  • The impact on the grade will depend on the attendance weight, but it will only count if the student attends the lesson. If they miss the lesson, it won't count against them.
  • It's recommended to only use the "Present" status for this class if the student is late.

Point Deduction System

In this case, attendance is mandatory, and students are penalized for absences.

  • Step 1: Go to the class settings page.

  • Step 2: Set the class type to either "Attendance, On Transcript" or "Attendance, Not on Transcript."

  • Step 3: Toggle on the "Point Deduction System."

  • Step 4: Set a threshold for how many lessons can be missed without being penalized (0 if none).

  • Step 5: Set the number of points to be deducted for each additional missed lesson.

  • Step 6:Go to the weights page. The weight field for attendance will be hidden, as the point deduction system is being used.

    • If the class grade is based only on attendance, set all other categories to zero.
    • If the class grade is based on other categories, those category weights should add up to 100%.

The points will be deducted as follows:

  • If the class grade is based only on attendance, the student will start with a class grade of 100, and the points will be deducted from 100.
  • If the class grade is based on other categories, the points will be deducted from the average score of those categories.

Attendance Score Impact

The attendance score is calculated based on the percentage of attendances and the value of each attendance type. It then impacts the grade based on the attendance weight.

  • Step 1: Go to the class settings page.

  • Step 2: Scroll down to the grading section.

  • Step 3: Set the class type to either "Attendance, On Transcript" or "Attendance, Not on Transcript."

  • Step 4: Ensure the "Point Deduction System" is toggled off.

  • Step 5: Go to the weights page and set the desired weight for attendance.

    • If the class grade is based only on attendance, set attendance to 100% and all other categories to zero.
    • If the class grade is based on other categories, all category weights should add up to 100%.

The attendance score is calculated as follows:

  • Present: Gives the student full credit for that lesson, equal to 100%.

  • Absent: Gives the student no credit, equal to 0%.

  • Late: Equals the value of the late grade, which could be the global late value or the class's late value.

You can set the value of the late grade for each class:

  • Step 1: Go to the class settings page.

  • Step 2: Select the "Settings" option from the class menu.

  • Step 3:In the grading section, enter the desired late value in the "Late Grade" field.

    • If no value is entered, the global late value will be used.
    • The class late grade will override the global late grade.

You can also change the global late value:

  • Step 1: Select the main menu "Settings."

  • Step 2: Select the "Grades" option from the settings menu.

  • Step 3: Enter the desired late value in the "Late Grade" field.

The Excused status exempts the student from the lesson, meaning the lesson will not be used when calculating the attendance grade. Similarly, Vacations do not affect the student's grade and are not used in calculating the attendance grade.

Here's an example using a class with 10 lessons:

  1. If the student is present for all 10 lessons, they will receive 100 for each lesson (total of 1000). Dividing the total by the number of lessons (10) results in an attendance score of 100 and a class grade of 100.
  2. If the student is present for 9 lessons and absent for 1, they will receive 100 for each present (900 total). Dividing by 10 lessons results in an attendance score of 90 and a class grade of 90.
  3. If the student is present for 9 lessons and late for 1 (with a late grade value of 65), they will receive 100 for each present and 65 for the late (965 total). Dividing by 10 lessons results in an attendance score of 96.5 and a class grade of 96.5.
  4. If the student is present for 8 lessons, excused for 1, and on vacation for 1, they will receive 100 for each present (800 total). However, the excused lessons are not calculated, so the total is divided by 8 lessons, resulting in an attendance score of 100 and a class grade of 100.

Attendance Reports

You can view attendance grades in various reports, including the Grades Report, Monthly Attendance, Overall Report, and Honor Roll Report. Note that the attendance grade is cumulative and only considers lessons with attendances taken. Any attendances left blank for a particular student will not be considered.

  • For detailed instructions on viewing attendance grades via reports, refer to the appropriate help tutorials in the "Reports" section.
