What is a Student Exemption, how to create it, and how it impacts their grade

Created by School Edtech, Modified on Mon, 6 Jan at 4:32 AM by School Edtech

Student exemptions can be entered in advance for one or more days and for one or more classes.

  • When exemptions are created in advance, they will be reflected here, with the status automatically marked excused. The teacher can then see that the student is exempt and skip their name during roll call.

Student exemptions are located in the Student's "Exemption" page.

To add a student exemption, follow these steps:

Step 1: Select "Students" from the main menu.

Step 2: Select the desired student.

Step 3: Select the "Exemption" menu for the student.

Step 4: Select "Add New."

Student exemptions can be created in advance as either an "Excused Absence" or "Vacation Absence."

  • Both excused and vacation statuses are treated the same way and are ignored in the grade calculation. These statuses will then automatically appear on the attendance rosters.

Step 5: Enter the start date of the exemption.

Step 6: Enter the end date of the exemption.

  • You can create exemptions for one or more days.

Step 7: Enter a description for the exemption.

Vacation Exemptions

  • Vacations are also created through the exemptions feature. For more information on how to add student vacations, see the appropriate help tutorial in the student section.
  • Vacation exemptions assume that the student will be missing all classes for the selected dates. To create a vacation exemption, follow these steps:

Step 1: Choose "Vacation" for the exemption type.

  • This will hide the remaining options.

Step 2: Select "Save" to create the vacation exemption.

Excused Exemptions

If you choose "Excused" for the exemption type, you will have an option to select specific classes during the date range to exempt the student from. To create an excused exemption, follow these steps:

Step 1: Choose "Excused" for the exemption type.

Step 2: Select the "Classes" field to see the available classes.

  • The list will only show the student's classes for the selected date range.

Step 3: Select the desired classes to include in the exemption.

Step 4: (Optional) Use the advanced settings to select specific days of the week.

  • Choosing a day will limit the exemption to the selected day.
  • For example, if the student needs to miss every Monday and Thursday's history class from January 1st through May 1st, select "Monday" and "Thursday" in the advanced settings.

Step 5: Finally, select "Save" to create the excused exemption.
